A research on informalisation of Indian economy

India is trying to give attention to it’s backbone in the genre of economy. In Indian, informal sector such as agriculture, mining, real estate, transport, household etc plays a major role in terms of growth of the country. According to the Economic Survey of 2018-19, approximately 93% of the total workforce is informal, which is neither monitored nor taxed by government.

National Statistical Commission (NSC), 2012, says the share of the informal workforce is about 50% of the national product. According to The Ministry of Labour and Employment (2015), 82% of informal sector employees were working in agricultural section (minus crop and animal husbandry). Others in informal sector had no written job contract, 77.3% got no paid leave and 69% were not eligible for any social security benefits.

UGC-MRP (University Grants Commission- Major Research Project) is conducting a research for the betterment this highly neglected part of Indian economy. The research is been associated jointly by UGC and Visva Bharati’s chair professor Pranab Kumar Chattopadhyay. Through this research, they plan to understand the actual cause behind the informalisation of firms and other business entities. Also they want to know how the policies should be oriented and formulated for the smooth formalization of Informal sector. On the urban informal sector enterprises in selected towns of West Bengal such as Kalyani, Bolpur, Berhampore, and Durgapur the study is getting done.
