After a long gap of 4 years, SRK made a huge comeback on the big screen with ‘Pathan. However, the 1000 crores banger now appears to be little more than “yeh toh bass trailer tha, picture abhi baaki hain mere dost.” After four successful masala ventures in Kollywood, the film industry is well aware of Atlee’s abilities. With ‘Bigil’, ‘Marshal’, and ‘Theri’, the former Shankar AD catapulted Thalapathy Vijay’s career to new heights. Atlee will debut in Bollywood through Shah Rukh Khan starrer ‘Jawan’. Following the failures of renowned directors such as Imtiaz Ali and Anand L Rai, Bollywood’s Badshah required films such as ‘Jawan’.
The 2:15 trailer made it look like a complete mass entertainer. Deepika Padukone, SRK’s lucky charm, will appear with him on the big screen. This combo has appeared in successful films such as Om Shanti Om, Chennai Express, Happy New Year, and Pathaan. Aside from this combo, the movie also starred Nayanthara, Vijay Sethupathi, Sunil Grover, Sanya Malhotra, and so on. Priyamani will be featured in Jawan following the item song she did in SRK starrer Chennai Express. There is speculation that Thalapthy Vijay will appear in Jawan as a cameo.

Before deconstructing the prevue, let’s clarify what it actually means. Prevue is an advertisement that consists of small clips from a film that will be released in the near future. In a nutshell, we call it a trailer. The name is merely a marketing ploy devised by the Red Chilies team. The preview gave a lot of hints for the storyline and on the other hand, successfully puzzled the public about it too. We may witness SRK in various looks, including a mask avatar, a mummified avatar, a bald avatar, a red shirt look, a dwarf look, fighting with Deepika’s character, and so on. We can see a lot of elements that the creator tried to hide with the fast cut editing if we watch the teaser at 0.25 speed.

Before Jawan, the massiest avatar SRK played is Rahul from Rohit Shetty’s 2013 film Chennai Express. According to the “morning shows the day” hypothesis, SRK appears in Jawan in a previously unseen avatar. Atlee was one step ahead of Rohit Shetty’s venture. The presentation was enhanced by the stylistic approach. Here in Jawan; SRK is doing something he excels at. The metro scene in which he dances to “Bekarar karke humein yun na jaiye” is the trailer’s most fascinating sequence. Nobody has ever portrayed the romantic sequence from the ‘Bees Saal Baad’ film song in this manner before. This is a current trend, as we can see Hrithik fighting in his Vedha avatar with the opposing group in the Puskar Gayathri 2022 film. The same thing Atlee did with Thalapathy Vijay in the ‘Mersal’ entry scene years ago. Now he’s doing the same thing with Bollywood actors.

The trailer has some masala elements for both the SRK and Atlee fans. In the latter portion of the trailer, we hear Shahrukh speak about his portrayal of anti-heroes. In another scene, we get to know about, “naam toh shuna hi hoga”. On the other side, if you closely observe Atlee’s filmmaking approach, you’ll see that his characters constantly make some sort of hand gesture, much like Thapathy Vijay did in films with the director. Deepika and Shahrukh did the same thing here. Deepika did it after she won the fight, and SRK did it on the subway. Regardless, Rohit Shetty’s signature throughout the action scenes is using a lot of cars. Similarly, Atlee’s main characters flip a lot during action or high moments. We witnessed it even in ‘Bigil’ 2019 film during a football game. In the prevue, SRK did the same.
Apart from SRK, the video gives a look at the rest of the cast, including Priyamani as the leader of the lady gang, Nayanthara as a police officer, Vijay Sethupathi (who could be portraying a politician or a senior police officer), and Sanya Malhotra as a member of the lady gang. Deepika demonstrated her charismatic screen presence in a little appearance.

Anirudh’s background music added a punch to the already entertaining prelude. The whistle in SRK’s entrance sequence was quite terrifying. The music team created a song titled ‘King Khan’ or something similar, which will be a treat for SRK fans. Overall, the teaser appeared to be catchy, engaging, and exciting for both SRK fans and general moviegoers.

The trailer embodies the sensibilities of South Indian directors as well as the magnetic screen presence of Bollywood celebrities. The fusion formula of combining Bollywood stars with South Indian filmmakers has always been a huge hit. South Indian directors such as Ramgopal Verma, T Rama Rao, Mani Ratnam, Shankar, AR Murgadoss, and Sandeep Reddy Vanga have produced some of Bollywood’s biggest hits. Time will tell whether Atlee will be their successor or not.
